It's amazing how we keep dropping upon.....

The most interesting places to stay. Burcott Mill was a good example of this. On the edge of the village Wookey (got to love the place names) Burcott is a working Flour grinding mill which is over 1000 years old.  We had no idea before we arrived that we were in such an interesting spot. We signed in and the owner showed us to our room. I was surprised when he headed for a room that had a sign saying Manager's office.

That was our room. Very nicely refurbished into a large bedroom with a huge modern bathroom. What a pleasant surprise.
The owner of the mill suggested the pub across the road for dinner.

We strolled over there, it was so much "the local" that it was one of those places where everybody goes quiet when strangers walk in.  The pub has those low doors and ceilings with heavy dark beams.  We wondered if it would be a great place to eat but we were pleasantly surprised with very good quality food.

In the morning we enjoyed a Full English at the Mill. The Mill was once the centre of this small village. Wookey Post Office is still based there.
Another charming surprise tucked away in the English countryside.

  1. You and Peggy are the luckiest people I know! I need to chat with you and get some travel advice. ;o)

  2. These little places are one of the things that we miss most about England. Our "local" pub and eatery was a few minutes ride away heading slightly up towards the moors, the setting you show above could be a double for "The Red Lion" . We could take the kids and in Summer sit outside and have nibbles and so on. Happy Days!!

I love hearing from you - write now!
