Tea for two

Here I am showing “Tea for Two” to my sister Barbara. She’s thrilled to bits with it. Do you remember this was my first real quilt on Mr Nolt?

DSCF0797

Barbara is getting married in November. They are having a Western themed wedding. Here I am trying on Cowgirl hats.

DSCF0804

These are actually real cowboy hats from Dallas Texas. A tad big I think. Hmmm I look a bit serious about it don’t I?

It’s time to show you………..

…….some spring flowers
This Banksia rose grows on the retaining wall behind our clothes line. It is just smothered with tiny perfect flowers.

A pink Clematis against a stunning back drop of blue. I don’t know what that plant is called but is sure is testament to blue flowers attracting bees to the garden. There were three bumble bees right there beside me when I took this photo.

Finally the snow ball tree has burst into bloom overnight. It looks so fresh.

What do you think?

Baby Steps

DSCF1567
In 2008 Taupo Quiltmakers recognised that we had lots of new members interested in learning quilting basics. So I ran a Baby Steps Programme. This small quilt 45 inch square features a variety of techniques, applique, half square triangles, flying geese, quarter square triangles and foundation piecing. We were just making little Baby Steps on our way to learning.  Some of the pieces used finished at 1 square inch, very fiddly piecing. I figured if you could make this you could make anything!
DSCF1569
The blocks finished at 7 inches. The sashings and corner stones finished at 1 inch.
 DSCF1570
Members made the quilt in a wide variety of colours. Some tweaked the design by adding another border. All in all I think it was an exercise which was enjoyed by all participants. I love my little quilt. It is now hanging in our front hallway where “Nine go to Calico Christmas” was hanging. Baby Steps is our spring wall hanging.
I’m sorry I cant give credit to the designer of this pattern. I did find it on the Web, it is called Folk Art Sampler designed by DotTquilt. It seems to have vanished from the Web.

In the Pink

Long ago in the mists of time when Peggy was living in Sydney and I was living in Thames, Peggy acquired a Mystery Quilt Pattern. This was before the internet made these things easily available. Peggy sent me the fabric requirements. Once I had that sorted she faxed me a “clue” each week. The mystery was very clever, I was kept guessing to the very end. Only problem was I didn’t think to hard about the fabric proportions. It never occurred to me that the pink I selected would be so dominant! The quilt was actually set on point but when I put the huge pink setting triangles in it was definitely pink overload! So I unpicked and changed to a square setting.
DSCF1557
This top has languished all this time waiting for quilting. Every now and then I would pull it out – and put it back in the TOO HARD basket. Looking for something for a final play on Nolt before I get serious about other quilts I popped “In the Pink” on. What a difference a bit of texture makes!!
DSCF1565
This quilt is going to my Aunty Bette. She wears these colours a lot. From the moment the top was finished it whispered to me who it should go to. Aunty Bette doesn’t know anything about the quilt. I think she will be a tad gob smacked when she receives it.

Nine go to Calico Christmas

Calico Christmas is the annual pre Christmas show of the Auckland Patchwork and Quilters Guild.
DSCF1538
In 2002 nine Taupo Quiltmakers hired a van and drove to Auckland to take in the show. To pass the time while we were travelling I took along some 9 patch blocks to stitch. While working on my blocks I was dreaming of an old fashioned scrappy quilt using my hand made blocks set on point. I decided I would make my quilt and show it at  Calico Christmas 2003.I completed the blocks by hand and continued the construction by machine. It took me nearly a year to complete. I spent a long time to seeking out just the right fabrics to use. I used a variety of fabrics for my setting triangles to add to the scrappy look. I wanted the strips between the rows to have a stripe that would run the length of the quilt. I searched and searched for just the right fabric. Fortunately I had a trip to Sydney and on a visit to Peg’s Pieces at Kirrawee I found it.
DSCF1542
Back home again I was on the hunt for the perfect border. Finally I found it, the background colour and the soft old roses were just right.
DSCF1541
Now to quilting. I decided on simple crosshatching through the 9 patches and setting triangles, hanging diamonds down the separating strips and a nice big cable for the border. I completed all the quilting on my domestic sewing machine.
DSCF1544
Just the binding to go – once again the hunt was on. I just couldn’t find the right thing. Suddenly I had a light bulb moment and decided to get the strip fabric out again. There in the remaining fabric I found the perfect little cross hatched strip.
All this attention paid off as Nine go to Calico Christmas won the Best Traditional Quilt Award.

Happy Hens

Katherine from Canada noticed the Happy Hen fabric I used in Kat’s Cheeky log cabin block. This made me think that some of you might like to see some more Happy Hens.

This happy little flock live on the top of the dresser in our sun room.

DSCF1528

The funny thing about them is they have been gifted to me or culled (read op shop find) from someone else’s flock.  They look very happy don’t they? The yellow and gold ones look like they migrated from Texas.

You may like to read more about Happy Hens.

Happy Hen fabric can be bought from Kiwiquilts.

No affiliations to these businesses, just think the product they offer is darned cute!

Sometimes fresh and……..

……….and simple is best!
Today for lunch we tucked into fresh baked focaccia and cold cuts.
DSCF1527
When we set focaccia  to rise for baking we drizzle it with garlic and fresh herbs that have been bruised with a mortar and pestle and soaked in some olive oil. By the time it rises nearly all the oil (about half a cup)has soaked into the dough. Just before baking  I poke extra holes in the top for another drizzle of  oil and sprinkle with flaky salt. Ooops forgot to do that bit! I whipped the oven open after about 4 minutes and sprinkled salt on top. All very yummy.
The wee glass of wine wasn’t bad either.

Multi purpose quilting tool

There’s more than one purpose for a T pin.
I was just about to assemble Fillet Mignon for lunch today when I realised I didn’t have any toothpicks to secure the bacon. I dashed out to the Studio to give Peggy a “Houston we have a problem” message. Her eyes settled on my pincushion full of sparkly new T pins that came with my new quilt frame.
DSCF1525
“Would T pins do the job?” she asked. The answer to that folks is “yes!”. They worked beautifully.

Try not to drool on your key board!
I must contact Karen of Sew Many Ways who runs Tool Time Tuesday. She’ll be so proud of me.
BTW lunch was yummy!!
